Am I really a Christian? After all, Jesus himself said that some people will do seemingly “Christian” things in his name but will not truly know him. To be sure there is clarity from God’s perspective. He is not confused about who does and does not know him. Though our self-awareness is limited, we have been given biblical criteria to help us evaluate whether we are indeed followers of Christ.

This study will lead us in understanding the importance of examining our standing with God and helps us to fearlessly ask the hard questions. Maybe you know you are not a Christian and you wonder what it really means to be one.

James is a practical study on how to live out your faith in your daily life. Could the gospel be lost in evangelical churches? In this study, Greear shows how moralism and legalism have often eclipsed the gospel, even in conservative churches. This Bible study is designed to take you deeper in your understanding of the gospel. It is about discovering the power that made Christianity Revolutionary. The teaching centers on the idea that “the gospel is not just the way we begin in Christ; it is also the way we grow in Christ.”

Ride Description

A two-day, 127 mile bicycle ride on the Eastern half of the Katy Trail. Riders unable to finish the full 127 miles will have the option of a shorter ride on day two. The shorter ride will equal 104 miles.

Ride Details

Day 1 will be 65.5 mile ride from north Jefferson City Trailhead to the Marthasville Trailhead. There are two options for Day 2. The first is a 61.5 mile ride from Marthasville to Machens then returning to St. Charles, and the second is a 38.2 mile ride from Marthasville to St. Charles.

Purpose

The purpose of this event is to raise funds for the Temple Baptist Church Adoption and Orphan Care Fund. This fund provides care for orphans and gives adoption grants to families desiring to rescue orphans through adoption. All proceeds for the 1:27 Ride to Rescue will go toward orphan rescue and care. (Some money raised above the $300 will help with transportation costs.)

Meals

SAG (Support and Gear) stops will be located approximately every 10 miles along the route to provide water, snacks and moral support. Otherwise, all meals will be at the rider’s expense. Lunch can be purchased in the towns along the route. Details will be provided to registered riders in March about an optional evening fellowship dinner in Washington on Day 1, and in St. Charles on Day 2.

Registration

• Registration opens January 15, 2012 and will be accepted until March 15, 2012.
• A minimum of $300 in pledges is required per participant. Each rider can recruit help from the TBC Youth Group (see Brad Perry), or other sources to help raise funds.
• Pledge money is due to the church office by Sunday, April 15, 2012. Checks should be made payable to Temple Baptist Church with “Adoption Fund” and the rider’s name in the memo line.
• Each rider will receive a free 1:27 Ride to Rescue t-shirt.

Important Information

All riders are required to wear helmets. Participants must be at least 16 years old. A pre-ride meeting will be held for participants a week or two before the ride.

Plan ahead! The 1:27 Ride to Rescue is geared toward the intermediate cyclist. Good physical conditioning will make the ride much more enjoyable. There is very little elevation change on this trail but the distance can be very strenuous. All riders will be expected to complete the ride each day but provisions will be made for a small number who experience difficulties with the distance or emergencies. Before the ride begins, ride as many miles as possible and ride as often as your schedule allows. Long rides of 40-50 miles are important, as are a series of back-to-back rides. You should be prepared to experience cycling in all types of weather. The Katy Trail is constructed of crushed limestone and is generally hard packed, so a mountain bicycle or hybrid bicycle with narrow tires is best suited for the trail. Weather conditions can make the ride more challenging. April weather is unpredictable and may be rainy or cool. Riders are advised  to bring quality rain-gear and wear layered clothing to accommodate the changing temperatures.

Transportation

Transportation Shuttles will be provided for riders who need it from Sullivan to the Katy Trail and returning each day for participants and their bicycles/gear. Shuttles will also be available from the Katy Trail to  a hotel in Washington on Friday evening and back to the trailhead on Saturday morning for riders spending the night in Washington. Amtrak is also an option at riders expense.

Bible Study. Prayer. Fasting. Service. These are just a few of the spiritual disciplines of the Christian life. While all who abide in Christ agree about the essential nature of these practices, most of us live with a sense of frustration when it comes to consistently implementing them.

Because we’re living in the middle of a consumer-driven culture, one that is constantly pushing us toward anything that’s quicker, newer, and better, it’s a constant struggle to fit these spiritual disciplines in between everything else grappling for our attention.

But Jesus has a better way.

In Abide, author Jared C. Wilson examines key sections in the Sermon on the Mount, and helps young adults see how these practices subvert the rhythms of culture so deeply ingrained in us. That subversion begins to happen when we stop striving to do a better job at Christianity and start finding the rhythm of truly being a Christian.
